LNP – SC orders authorities to implement anti raging guidelines in universities
In a landmark judgment aimed at curbing ragging in higher educational institutions in Sri Lanka, the Supreme Court today directed the relevant authorities, including the University Grants Commission (UGC), to implement the guidelines formulated to prevent ragging incidents in state universities.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Shiran Gooneratne, with Justices Priyantha Fernando and Sobhitha Rajakaruna agreeing, following a Fundamental Rights petition filed by a university student.
The petitioner had sustained serious injuries during a ragging incident at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2020, when a backhoe tyre was allegedly rolled over his body. As a result of this inhuman and violent treatment, the petitioner was hospitalised for nearly three months.
