LNP – Sri Lanka Police deploy 24/7 security at Chabad houses

Police said today that any threats to the safety of foreign nationals on the island will be evaluated, and appropriate security measures will be implemented accordingly.

In response to reported threats, police have deployed 24-hour security at Chabad houses (Jewish community centers) established in various parts of Sri Lanka for Israeli residents and tourists to engage in religious activities, relax and access food and drink.

Earlier, Sri Lanka Police enhanced security at these centers following the outbreak of the Gaza conflict and warnings of potential threats to popular tourist areas. Israeli tourists, including surfers in Arugam Bay, have also been placed under increased protection.

Police dispersed a group of protesters holding a silent demonstration outside a Chabad House in Colombo on Monday.

The protesters urged the Sri Lankan government to act against Israeli nationals allegedly overstaying their visas and engaging in unauthorized business activities in tourist areas. They claimed these activities were negatively affecting local communities.
