A five-year-old girl was killed while three others were critically injured in a shocking tale of horror where a father had allegedly stabbed his three children and the wife and had set himself on fire over a family dispute in Avissawella on Sunday night.
The suspect Arumugam Kanapathi reportedly under the influence of liquor had allegedly stabbed his wife and three of the four children in his house in Kalatuwana West at Tunmodera in Avissawella.
His five-year-old daughter Kanapathi Nirosha was killed on the spot while the wife Subramanium Indrani, son Kanapathi Dinesh Kumar (11) and six-months-old daughter Kanapathi Dilshani were also stabbed and rushed to Avissawella Hospital in a critical condition.
Another son who had managed to escape from his father was found by the police hiding in a nearby jungle yesterday morning.
According to police the suspect who had returned home in the night had started a quarrel with his wife which ended up with his wife being beaten and stabbed. The crying children who had tried to intervene were also allegedly stabbed by the suspect. The suspect had then set himself on fire.
The neighbours hearing the commotion had rushed to the scene and the injured were immediately dispatched to hospital. One boy was found dead on admission while the rest, including the suspect, had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
The reason for the stabbing was believed to be the wife of the suspect having an illicit affair with another man.
The suspect who had got to know about this had stabbed his wife and children.
HQI Avissawella Police Chief Inspector Nalin Attanayake and Inspector Thilakaratne are conducting investigations.
