?The leader of the UNP hopes to issue fertilizer to farmers at Rs 550 as a subsidy, however, we will issue fertilizer at Rs 350 to farmers as an investment,? declared Presidential candidate Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse addressing a meeting at Galgamuwa.
Continuing further he said that ?the UNP hopes to issue fertilizer at a lower price as a subsidy but we treat it as an investment, as I would increase agricultural products at a low turnover and such production would subscribe to the development of the country. When the production of a country is developed, it is a factor which would contribute to the development of the country. That is why the fertilizer subsidy given to farmers are treated as an investment to the country,? declared Premier Rajapakse.Speaking further, the Prime Minister said that he would take steps to strengthen the farmer economically by increasing production at a low cost. ?Plans have been completed to develop agri-economy in this manner. There is no need for me to tire myself very much to prepare these plans as I know the tears and sweat of all farmers very well and their miseries too. Hence, I have a better understanding of the difficulties they face as I was born in a farming area. I know the obstacles they face. In the future, I will remove all the obstacles confronting the farmers and would distribute all barren lands in the country to farmers. I will take action to introduce water schemes they require. Also, we would expedite completion of the 10,000 `wewa` project.?
He also said that parents in these areas have contributed their children to guarantee the unitary status of the country. ?I respect their decision to hand over their children to the security of the country. But, a deduction 10% from their salaries is made for having provided for them who have dedicated themselves to protect the country. I hope to remove the 10% imposed on housing as a consideration to them. Some say that when we come to power the war will start. We do not want war. We love the country and its people. We are against the war. What we need is peace with honour. Therefore, it is essential to say that we have the strength to solve it through negotiations, as all the forces from the South are with us together, except Ranil Wickremesinghe of the UNP. I say that as some of the UNPers are also with us.?
Continuing further, the Prime Minister said that he was born in a remote village. Hence, he knows the aspirations of the ordinary people. ?You hope to provide a sound education to your children and create a disciplined, law abiding society. To gain employment for the children suited to their education. I dedicate myself to fulfill your expectations. I wish to emphasise the fact that I will not breach that trust even by an iota.?
The Prime Minister also said that during the UNP times the Vocational Training Authority (VTA), taught hair cutting and brick making and operate a machine to make bricks. However, when the PA came to power, the President appointed me as the Labour and Vocational Training Minister and gave me a big responsibility. Accordingly, I started training centres of the VTA in temples and very speedily trained the youth in various professions. Through this scheme, the youth were able to secure employment overseas. In the future, a set of equipment would be given as an incentive to each trainee who successfully completes the training. This would enable them to contribute to the development of the country. He also plans to establish industries in all the provinces which are required to develop the country. ?You entrust your lives to me in order to lead a comfortable life. Your trust will never he breached by me. For me, it is as certain as the sunrise tomorrow, that you would cast your vote for me on November 17 and make me victorious on November 18. My victory is your victory as well, and your victory is the victory of the country said the Prime Minister.
Environmental and National Resources Minister A.H.M. Fowzie said that if Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse is elected on November 17, he would solve the problems of the Muslim and give them the protection they need and hence, a majority of the Muslims would vote the Prime Minister into power.
Speaking further he said that the Prime Minister is a friend of the Muslims, anywhere there is discrimination to Muslims. The Prime Minister raised his voice and spoke on behalf of the Palestinians for 20-25 years. He also opposed the invasion of Iraq. Today, the Muslims are suffering because of this invasion.
He also said that when the LTTE attacked the Muslims in the East and when the lands of the Muslims were grabbed Ranil Wickremesinghe could not protect the Muslims. Ranil Wickremesinghe advised Rauff Hakeem to seek protection from Prabhakaran. ?If Ranil becomes the President what will happen to the security of the Muslims. The Muslim people know very well about this. When Muslims die they are buried according to their religious customs. They do not cremate. There was a time when Ranil was the Prime Minister, Muslims were cremated without being buried,? he said. ?We will never forget that.?
