Presidential Suite at Jayewardenepura Hospital opened to public
The special ward at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, which was previously only for the Executive President, is now open to the public for medical care starting today, October 24, according to the President’s Media Division. This decision was made by the Ministry of Health and the hospital's management, following instructions from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the PMD reported. Built in 1984 with funding from the Government of Japan, the hospital was designed to hold 1,000 beds. Among its facilities, a special unit called Room No. 1001 was set aside solely for the Executive President's use. Over the past 42 years, this unit was rarely used. It was kept maintained in case a sitting President needed it, but it was never opened for patients, according to the PMD. Starting today, this special unit will now serve general patients at the hospital. This change aligns with the Government’s goal of using public resources more effectively to address the healthcare needs of the people, the PMD added.
