Thousands evacuated as Hawaii faces worst flooding in 20 years
Hawaii is currently under a flood watch after a strong storm hit the state, leading officials to issue evacuation orders. Governor Josh Green announced on Saturday that the risk of flash floods is particularly high for Oahu and parts of Maui County. This storm is the second severe weather event to affect the islands in just a week. Over the past ten days, some areas have seen 40 to 50 inches (127 cm) of rain, according to Governor Green. He mentioned that Oahu might get an additional four to six inches, while certain parts of Maui could receive between four to 12 inches. In a video statement, he urged people not to underestimate the storm. Although there have been no reported deaths, there have been a few serious injuries. The state has set up a program to help those displaced by the storm with discounted hotel rates. The governor also warned in a follow-up post that the ground, already soaked from previous rains, means that even a small amount of rain could lead to flooding, road closures, and damage. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi estimated that the storms could cause over $1 billion (£745 million) in damages. So far, more than 230 individuals have been rescued, as stated by Blangiardi during a news conference on Friday.
