Kapila Chandrasena, the former CEO of SriLankan Airlines, has been ordered to stay in custody until April 2 by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. This decision was made by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama after reviewing arguments from officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and Chandrasena’s lawyers. He was taken into custody on March 12, 2026, on accusations of accepting a bribe of $2 million related to the Airbus aircraft deal. Chandrasena, who led SriLankan Airlines during a 2013 agreement to buy 10 aircraft for $2.3 billion, faces charges of plotting to receive a bribe of $16 million. He is also alleged to have accepted €1.45 million into a bank account in Singapore. Prosecutors claim that Chandrasena set up a shell company in Brunei under his wife’s name and facilitated the payment of the kickback into its Singapore account.
