Minister assures uninterrupted fuel supply to operators in tourism industry
The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, has promised that the tourism sector in Sri Lanka will not face fuel shortages that may affect other parts of the country. In an official statement, he explained that a special priority system has been set up to keep all tourism services running smoothly. Recently, there has been an unusual spike in fuel buying by consumers in Sri Lanka. This increase seems to be caused by fears of a potential fuel shortage linked to events in the Middle East, according to the statement. The Deputy Minister assured that the country has enough fuel reserves and that more shipments are expected in the following weeks. He expressed confidence that fuel distribution will continue without any interruptions. To manage the recent increase in demand and avoid hoarding, a fuel rationing system has been put in place immediately. Authorities have clarified that this measure is not due to an actual shortage but is meant to ensure fair distribution. Moreover, a special system is now in place to provide uninterrupted fuel access for vehicles in the tourism sector. This system, managed by the Tourism Development Authority, uses a QR code system that can be accessed through an easy online application, allowing tourism operators to get the fuel they need. Additionally, the government has introduced a temporary four-day work week for public sector employees to lower unnecessary travel and ease pressure on fuel demand. Addressing worries about misinformation, the Deputy Minister stated, “I am aware of misleading and negative reports circulating on social and mainstream media. It is my duty to inform all parties about the real situation on the ground through this statement.”
