Today, on the 12th, the Sri Lanka Navy brought two multi-day fishing trawlers, believed to be carrying drugs and weapons, to Dikkowita Harbour. These vessels were intercepted in international waters located to the south of Sri Lanka. The Navy also arrested 10 individuals who were on board the trawlers. The suspicious boats were spotted during a special naval operation that utilized long-range naval ships. When searching one of the trawlers, naval officers found many sacks that are suspected to hold narcotics, weighing over 600 kilograms. In addition, eight pistols with magazines, two T-56 rifles, and one M16 rifle were recovered from that same vessel. The M16 rifle is said to be a weapon used mainly by special security forces. The second fishing trawler is thought to have been providing support and surveillance for the first one. The fishermen arrested are from the Southern Province. Both trawlers and the suspects were taken to Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour this morning. This incident marks the largest amount of narcotics seized by the Navy this year.
