UN Security Council to vote on first resolutions since beginning of war
The UN Security Council is set to vote today on two different draft resolutions regarding the war in Iran and its effects on the surrounding region. The first resolution, proposed by Gulf nations, condemns attacks on them and Jordan by Iran. In response, Russia, an ally of Iran on the council, has put forward an opposing draft. This text, while not naming Iran, Israel, or the US, denounces all assaults on civilians and calls for all sides to cease fighting and resume negotiations. This marks the first action by the council since it held an emergency meeting shortly after the conflict began. During that meeting, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stated that the airstrikes by Israel and the US on Iran, as well as the Iranian strikes on regional countries, violated the UN charter. Iran's ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticized the Gulf nations, claiming they were attempting to shift the narrative of aggressor and victim with what he described as a biased and politically motivated resolution. The draft currently has over 90 sponsors, including the UK. It calls for an immediate halt to all attacks and threats from Iran against the six Gulf countries and Jordan, including those carried out through proxy groups. Additionally, it condemns any actions or threats by Tehran that could disrupt international navigation in the vital Strait of Hormuz.
