UK cops arrest 4 in Iran spying probe
British police detained four men on Friday for allegedly assisting Iranian intelligence operations. The Metropolitan Police reported that these arrests were made as part of a counter-terrorism investigation. The suspects are thought to have been observing "locations and individuals connected to the Jewish community in the London area." They were taken into custody under the National Security Act in the UK, which addresses actions that could support a foreign intelligence agency. The police confirmed that the investigation involves Iran. Among the arrested are one Iranian citizen and three individuals with dual British-Iranian citizenship. They were apprehended early Friday morning at homes in Barnet and Watford during a planned operation. Helen Flanagan, who leads counter-terrorism policing in London, stated that these arrests are part of a prolonged investigation aimed at disrupting harmful activities. She expressed understanding of the public's concerns, especially within the Jewish community, and urged anyone who notices something suspicious to reach out to the police. These arrests occur amidst increased alertness in the UK regarding potential Iranian retaliation following recent US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, which have escalated tensions in the Middle East.
