The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has taken into custody an Acting Registrar of Births and Deaths from the Alayadiwembu Divisional Secretariat. She is accused of asking for and receiving a bribe related to a birth certificate registration. Reports from CIABOC indicate that the registrar demanded Rs. 1,000 from a businessman who came to register his daughter’s birth. She initially accepted Rs. 500. The arrest followed a complaint from the businessman, who lives in Maruthamunai. Investigations showed that the registrar told the businessman to return on the 16th to pick up the registered birth certificate and to bring the remaining Rs. 500. When the businessman returned, the female registrar allegedly gave him the birth certificate and took the remaining Rs. 500 as a bribe. At that moment, officers from the Bribery Commission arrested her. The suspect is set to appear in the Akkaraipattu Magistrate’s Court.
