The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection has given its approval for a Bill aimed at ending pension benefits for Members of Parliament in Sri Lanka. The committee's Chair, MP Najith Indika, announced that the Bill received unanimous support during their meeting. He explained that the initiative aligns with a major promise made in the current government's policy statement. “The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection has unanimously greenlighted the Bill to eliminate pensions for MPs. One of our proposals in the policy statement was to stop pensions for MPs after they serve a few years in Parliament,” he stated. Additionally, he mentioned that the new Bill would revoke the Parliamentary Pensions Act No. 1 of 1977. Once Parliament passes this legislation next week, MPs will no longer qualify for a pension. “From now on, serving in Parliament will be viewed as a public service. We see this as a crucial move for our political culture and to honor the commitments we made before the election. With actions like this, we are clearly showing the direction we are taking and our plans for the future,” added MP Indika.
