The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has reported a serious case of human trafficking linked to a Sri Lankan man living abroad, who is falsely offering jobs in Moldova. The Bureau has learned that this scam operates through videos shared on social media. Many victims have come forward, claiming they were tricked into paying money to this individual. The SLBFE is taking legal steps against the accused and encourages anyone else who has been cheated to file a complaint with them right away. The Bureau reminded the public that according to the SLBFE Act No. 21 of 1985, it is required to have a valid license to recruit workers, promote foreign jobs, collect money or personal data, or manage passports for jobs abroad. Engaging in these activities without a license is a crime that can lead to harsh punishments. Additionally, a special police team has been set up within the SLBFE under the direction of Minister Vijitha Herath to fight against human trafficking and related scams. The Bureau mentioned that this unit has already received many complaints. They also noted an increase in cases where Sri Lankans use personal social media accounts or new pages to falsely claim they can secure foreign jobs. Therefore, the SLBFE strongly advises job seekers not to give money or passports to middlemen and to pursue overseas employment only through agencies that are officially recognized by the SLBFE.
