Singapore is increasing health checks at Changi Airport in response to a Nipah virus outbreak in West Bengal, India. Authorities announced that temperature screenings will be conducted for flights arriving from the affected regions. Health advisories will be given to travelers entering Singapore, advising them to get medical help if they feel sick after traveling. Outbound travelers will also receive guidance on health precautions, according to a statement from the Communicable Diseases Agency on Wednesday. Additionally, the Ministry of Manpower is enhancing monitoring of newly arrived migrant workers from South Asia. The Nipah virus is mainly spread through contact with bats or by eating date palm sap or fruits that have been contaminated by bats. The agency mentioned that since 2011, ongoing bio-surveillance of bat populations in Singapore has not shown any signs of the virus.
