The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the Officer-in-Charge of the Minor Complaints Division at the Cinnamon Gardens Police to appear in court. This notice comes after investigations were conducted into a case against former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and six others. The case involves charges of creating public disruption by holding a protest that blocked roads near the United Nations office in Thunmulla, Colombo, back in 2016. This protest was against the visit of the then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, to Sri Lanka in 2016. The case was discussed in court today, November 19, before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama. During the hearing, two witnesses provided evidence for the complainant under the oversight of the Cinnamon Gardens Police. After reviewing the evidence presented, the Chief Magistrate instructed the Officer-in-Charge of the Minor Complaints Division to come to court on March 9.
