The Deputy Director General of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Darshana Samaraweera, has been placed on compulsory leave due to the issues surrounding the Grade 6 English module. Along with Samaraweera, two other NIE officials have also been suspended in connection with this matter. Previously, Prof. Manjula Vithanapathirana, the Director General of the NIE, chose to resign from her role until the investigation into the Grade 6 English module is complete. The Ministry of Education announced that the distribution of a newly printed Grade 6 English language module has been halted after it was found to include a reference to an unsuitable website. The Ministry began an investigation following a complaint about the inclusion of this inappropriate website's name in the module. The textbook, which was created by the NIE, had already been printed before this issue arose. Additionally, Nalaka Kaluwewe, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, has filed a formal complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) regarding this situation, as inquiries continue. Last week, a decision was made to postpone the implementation of the planned education reforms for Grade 6 until 2027. Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa mentioned that this decision was reached during the weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The Minister emphasized that due to the problems with the Grade 6 English module and other related issues, the government has opted not to move forward with the proposed education reforms for Grade 6 students this year in Sri Lanka.
