Recent satellite assessments have detected around 4,800 landslides in Sri Lanka since Cyclone Ditwah, according to Kumari Meegahakotuwa, the Director General of the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies. She shared this information during a media briefing on the 12th at the Department of Government Information. Meegahakotuwa explained that the mapping of landslides was done using satellite images and data collected after the cyclone. She emphasized that the analysis showed the actual number of landslides is much higher than what has been reported in the media. The nationwide examination of satellite images has allowed for a thorough mapping of landslides, revealing that the total incidents are nearly 4,800. “By using satellite imagery taken during and after Cyclone Ditwah, we conducted landslide mapping. Our findings indicate that the number of landslides is significantly more than what has been previously reported. We identified about 4,800 landslide events through this satellite data,” she stated.
