UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed serious worry over the lack of respect for international law during the recent US military actions in Venezuela. In a statement delivered at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday, Guterres emphasized that international law is crucial for keeping peace and security around the world. He also raised alarms about the consequences of detaining Nicolás Maduro, the ousted Venezuelan leader, and his wife, Cilia Flores. Guterres stated, “I am deeply concerned about the possible increase in instability in the country, the likely effects on the region, and the example it may set for international relations.” He noted that Venezuela has faced many years of internal conflict, social issues, and economic hardship. “Democracy has suffered. Millions of people have left the country. The situation is critical, but there is still a chance to avoid a bigger and more destructive disaster,” Guterres said. He continued, “In complex situations like the one we are facing now, it is vital to adhere to principles.” Guterres also mentioned that international law provides solutions for problems like drug trafficking, resource disputes, and human rights issues. “This is the path we need to follow,” he concluded.
