Ishara Sewwandi, the suspect accused of disguising herself as a lawyer and supplying the revolver used in the courtroom assassination of underworld figure “Ganemulla Sanjeewa”, had spent three months in hiding in Matugama and Middeniya under the protection of female bodyguards, before she left for Nepal, police investigations have revealed. According to a senior police officer, Sewwandi, believed to have links with a notorious underworld gang and an international drug network, lived in two safe houses in Matugama for about two months. She later moved to Middeniya, where she remained in hiding for another month before fleeing further north. Police said after leaving Middeniya, Sewwandi travelled in a rented vehicle to Kilinochchi, where she hid for four days, and then proceeded to Jaffna, from where she escaped to India by dinghy boat with the help of four accomplices who ensured her protection. During interrogation, Sewwandi claimed she could not remember the locations of the houses where she stayed and refused to reveal who had sheltered her. The revelations emerged during questioning by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD). Sewwandi, was arrested in Nepal and brought back to Sri Lanka two days ago, where she was tracked down with the assistance of Nepal law enforcement authorities.
