On Saturday, President Donald Trump stated that Britain is considering sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. However, he emphasized that the United States does not require British assistance to succeed in the ongoing conflict with Iran. This remark highlights the tension between the two military allies. Trump has openly criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, claiming that Starmer has damaged the historically strong relationship between the U.S. and the U.K. after London prevented the U.S. from using British bases for initial strikes against Iran. In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned he would "remember" the lack of British backing during the Iran situation. He stated, “The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer — But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!” This social media message followed the British Ministry of Defence's announcement on Saturday that it was preparing the Prince of Wales aircraft carrier for potential deployment. Nevertheless, a British official confirmed that no final decision has been made regarding the carrier's deployment to the Middle East. Starmer has defended his choice not to permit U.S. forces to utilize British bases for initial strikes on Iran, explaining that he needed assurance that any military action would be legal and carefully planned. He later did allow U.S. forces to use British bases for what he termed defensive strikes against Iranian missile storage and launch sites.
