Women are vital social partners - PM Harini urges a thriving nation where women lead with dignity
On International Women’s Day, Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya sent her warm wishes to all women in Sri Lanka and across the globe. She highlighted the United Nations' theme for this year, "Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls," stressing the need to achieve women’s rights, deliver justice, and take meaningful steps for all women and girls. The Prime Minister pointed out that women are essential to the fabric of Sri Lankan society and its economy. She discussed government plans under the policy initiative "A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life," which aims to view women as active partners in national growth instead of just beneficiaries. Important actions include boosting women’s entrepreneurship, offering support for self-employment through technical and financial help, enhancing safety in public transport and workplaces, and increasing the presence of women in decision-making roles. Additionally, there are programs focused on improving women’s nutrition, reproductive health, and mental wellness. Dr. Amarasuriya noted that women are crucial social partners, full of intelligence, strength, and creativity. She called for a future where women can live fearlessly, have their skills acknowledged, and lead lives of dignity. On this International Women’s Day, the Prime Minister expressed her hope that this marks the start of a new era where the dreams of all women in Sri Lanka are achieved and celebrated worldwide.
