President Maithripala Sirisena has asked the Cabinet where the large quantities of narcotics, including heroin and other contraband products, that had been confiscated and what measures had been taken to destroy them.
The Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayake had responded that the seized heroin had not been destroyed.
The President appointed a committee, comprising three members, at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting,to look into ways and means of destroying the massive quantity of heroin that had been taken seized.
The Committee comprises Minister Sagala Ratnayake, Minister of Justice and Buddha Sasana Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Minister of Science and Technology Susil Premajayantha.
SSP Ruwan Gunasekera, the Police Spokesman, answering our queries,said part of the contraband is with the government analyst. Another part is at the Police Station which conducted the raid, and the balance is in the custody of the Courts.
