CPC unions say talks with president successful, no strike

Following special discussions held with President Maithripala Sirisena, CPC trade unions have confirmed that they will not resort to strike action.

This resolution was arrived at as a result of a special meeting held at the presidential secretariat office at 11.00am today (1) dismissing the false rumours circulating about a petroleum strike amongst the general public.

The CPC organized a strike on July 24, 2017 as the government did not meet their demands relating to the ownership of the Hambanthota Tank complex.

Following initial discussions with the president, the strike action was halted as the distribution of fuel was declared an essential service from July 25, 2017.

It was further reported that due to the situation of unrest, there were several queues of vehicles near filling stations yesterday, as consumers feared an impending strike.
