The Sri Lanka Navy has detained five fishermen from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu for entering Sri Lankan waters. Indian media reports state that the fishermen were fishing in the waters between Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar when Sri Lankan naval officers stopped their boat. The Navy not only arrested the fishermen but also confiscated their mechanised fishing vessel. The fishermen were taken to a naval facility in Mannar for further questioning. In response, fishermen's groups in Tamil Nadu have called on both the Indian Central and State governments to act quickly to secure the fishermen's release and to avoid such incidents in the future.
