WHO says it has verified 13 attacks on health sites in Iran
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Thursday that the agency has confirmed 13 attacks on health facilities in Iran during a campaign involving the U.S. and Israel. They are also investigating reports of four medical workers being killed and 25 others injured. "WHO has confirmed 13 attacks on healthcare in Iran and one in Lebanon," stated WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference. He did not specify who was responsible or share further details. Dr. Hanan Balkhy, who was also at the briefing, mentioned that four ambulances in Iran were impacted and that hospitals experienced minor damage from nearby strikes, based on information from Iranian authorities. One hospital in Tehran was evacuated as a result, as noted by the U.N. health agency earlier. Iran’s ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva claimed in a letter to Tedros this week that military strikes had hit 10 facilities. Balkhy added that the WHO logistics hub in Dubai, which supplies health materials to many countries, is temporarily shut down due to transport issues in the area.
