Businessman remanded over allegedly taking Rs. 5 mln bribe to secure bail for detainee
A businessman has been remanded after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 5 million to help a detainee secure bail. The Colombo Magistrate’s Court, led by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, ordered that the businessman remain in custody until March 13, following a court session today (March 3). The Bribery Commission informed the court that its investigation into the matter is still in progress. According to CIABOC, the businessman is accused of taking Rs. 5 million from the relatives of a man who was arrested and remanded in 2021 by the Illegal Assets Investigation Division, claiming he could help get the suspect released on bail.
