Donald Trump has announced that the United States has begun “major combat operations” against Iran in an eight-minute video shared on Truth Social. He stated that Iran’s “threatening actions pose a direct danger to the United States, our troops, our overseas bases, and our allies worldwide.” Trump mentioned that for 47 years, the Iranian government has been chanting “Death to America” and has carried out a continuous campaign of violence. He referred to the US embassy crisis from 1979 to 1981, during which 66 hostages were held for 444 days. “It’s been mass terror, and we’re not going to accept it any longer,” he said, also claiming that Iran tried to revive its nuclear program and was working on long-range missiles. Trump declared, “we are going to destroy their missiles” and “annihilate their navy,” while noting that efforts have been made to prevent casualties, though “Americans may be lost.” He urged the Islamic Revolutionary Guard to “lay down their arms” or “face certain death.” Speaking to the people of Iran, Trump said, “the hour of your freedom is at hand” and warned them that “bombs will be dropping everywhere.” He concluded with, “When we are finished, take over your government; it will be yours to take.”
