World Economic Forum boss quits after review of Epstein links
Borge Brende, the president and CEO of the World Economic Forum (WEF), has stepped down after a review of his connections to the late Jeffrey Epstein, who was a convicted sex offender. The forum initiated an independent investigation into Brende's relationship with Epstein after the US Department of Justice released documents related to Epstein. Brende admitted that he met Epstein for dinner three times between 2018 and 2019 and had communicated with him through emails and texts, but he claimed he was “completely unaware” of Epstein's criminal history. The WEF stated that the review found “no additional concerns beyond what has been previously disclosed.” Brende, who previously served as Norway's foreign minister, expressed regret for not looking into Epstein's background more thoroughly. The WEF holds its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, drawing leaders from politics and business worldwide. In a statement released on Thursday, Brende mentioned that he made the decision to resign after over eight years in the position, following “careful consideration.” He added, “I believe now is the right moment for the Forum to continue its important work without distractions.” Epstein was convicted in 2008 for soliciting prostitution from a minor and was registered as a sex offender.
