A visit from a romantic partner of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho,” resulted in his capture and death, according to Mexican authorities. This assessment followed a military operation on Sunday, during which 25 members of the National Guard were killed in subsequent violence. Oseguera was the head of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and was Mexico's most-wanted cartel boss. The U.S. government had placed a $15 million reward for information that would lead to his arrest. He died after being injured during a military operation by Mexican special forces in a forested area near the town of Tapalpa in Jalisco state, as reported by Mexico’s defense ministry. Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla noted that a tip from a confidante of one of Oseguera's partners enabled officials to swiftly organize the raid on his compound for the next day. During the operation, Oseguera’s armed men shot at the security forces, resulting in a conflict that spread to a cabin complex in the woods. Oseguera and two of his bodyguards were injured in the exchange. They were then airlifted to Mexico City but unfortunately did not survive. "Sadly, they died on the way," Trevilla stated during the president's daily press briefing. Authorities discovered a cache of rifles, grenade launchers, rocket launchers, and mortar shells at the site. The Attorney General’s Office of Mexico is conducting necessary investigations across 14 states, which is nearly half of the country. Retaliatory violence has surged throughout Mexico in the wake of these events.
