A special meeting focused on improving and updating vocational education in Sri Lanka took place recently at the Parliamentary Complex. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya led the discussion, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Media Division. This meeting is an important step in transforming vocational education across the country, with plans to upgrade 25 technical colleges in all 25 districts to meet modern global standards. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya chaired the meeting in her role as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, alongside Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage. During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted that these development efforts should go beyond just teaching vocational skills. She stressed the need to focus on the mental health and overall well-being of young people. She emphasized the necessity of creating modern hostels, cafeterias, and healthcare services, designing environments that are both enjoyable and promote mental wellness, and giving each technical college a unique identity to distinguish them from other educational institutions. Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage mentioned that work on developing 23 technical colleges could begin soon to strengthen the human resources needed for national growth. He also indicated that support from the Tri-Forces would be sought for these construction and modernization efforts. The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha, Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa, and officers from the Tri-Forces.
