A new Gazette notification has been released, allowing women to work as sanitary workers and food service attendants during the night in Sri Lanka. This update comes from the Minister of Labour, Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando, who made changes to the Shop and Office Employees (Regulation of Employment and Remuneration) Act. Previously, the law permitted women over 18 to work as ‘ladies lavatory attendants’ only after 6:00 p.m. Under the revised regulations, the Gazette now specifies that women over 18 can be employed as janitorial attendants or food service attendants from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the next day. The Ministry of Labour has stressed that it is the employers' duty to ensure suitable housing, transportation, health and safety measures, and overall welfare for women working these hours.
