The Kalutara Magistrate’s Court granted bail today (29) to Jayanath Navaratne, a member of the Kalutara Municipal Council. He was arrested for his involvement in an assault that took place yesterday during a protest by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) in Kalutara town. The Kalutara South Headquarters Police detained Navaratne after he allegedly attacked a motorcyclist during the protest led by former Minister Ajith P. Perera on January 28. According to police reports, the motorcyclist had stopped near the protest and questioned if there were still “fools” taking part in such demonstrations. This comment reportedly provoked Navaratne, leading to the assault. The motorcyclist is currently receiving medical care at the Nagoda Teaching Hospital in Kalutara, as reported by Ada Derana.
