India's yearly economic report, released on Thursday, suggested that age restrictions should be considered for using social media and gambling applications to address what it calls “digital addiction” across the nation. With India being an important market for social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and X, there is currently no national minimum age for accessing these sites. The report came out just days before Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present the national budget. It encouraged families to set limits on screen time, have device-free hours, and engage in offline activities together. The report stated, “Platforms should take responsibility for checking age and ensuring age-appropriate settings, especially for social media, gambling apps, auto-play features, and targeted ads.” Meta, the company behind Facebook, Alphabet, which owns YouTube, and X have not yet responded to requests for comments.
