General

The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection in Sri Lanka has given its approval to the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill. The committee met in Parliament, led by Member of Parliament Najith Indika, to discuss the details of these bills. During the meeting, there were thorough discussions about both pieces of legislation. Officials mentioned that some additional changes need to be made to these bills and that they should be sent to the Attorney General’s Department for advice before going to the Cabinet for approval, according to a statement from the Department of Communication of Parliament. These amendments to the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill aim to update the current laws controlling the trafficking and production of dangerous drugs in international waters and to introduce new laws and regulations.
