At least 11 people lost their lives and around 12 others were hurt when gunmen opened fire on a crowd at a football field in Salamanca, central Mexico, on Sunday. Witnesses reported that armed individuals arrived in multiple vehicles and began shooting at the attendees without any clear target. Many families were present to enjoy time together after a match featuring local teams. Among the deceased were at least one woman and one child. The reason for the shooting remains unknown. Last year, the state of Guanajuato, where Salamanca is located, had the highest murder rate in Mexico. Neighbors reported hearing around 100 gunshots as the assailants attacked the Cabañas pitch in the Loma de Flores area. Local and federal authorities are currently looking into this tragic shooting. This incident followed a day of violence in the city, which saw five men killed and one person kidnapped. Guanajuato has experienced an increase in violence from various gangs involved in oil theft, fuel-related crimes, drug trafficking, and extortion. Gang members often hijack tanker trucks carrying oil and tap into pipelines owned by the state oil company, Pemex.
