A police officer from the motorcycle squad of the Gampaha Division Crimes Investigation Bureau has reportedly been suspended after being arrested for the alleged assault of a Catholic priest. Police said the priest was riding his motorcycle from Udugampola, Gampaha to Kirindiwita last night (24) when officers signaled him to stop due to certain suspicions. However, the priest did not stop and continued for about one kilometer, according to the police. The officers then caught up with him, stopped the motorcycle, and an altercation took place, during which the priest was allegedly attacked and later needed to be hospitalized. In a related development, six police officers who were arrested for the alleged assault have been remanded until tomorrow (26). This group, which includes three sergeants and three constables from the Gampaha Division Crimes Investigation Bureau, was presented in front of the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court today.
