Nearly 2,000 cybercrimes reported in 2025, over 300 arrested - Police
Sri Lanka Police announced that 318 people were arrested for various cybercrimes in 2025. According to Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler, over 2,000 cybercrimes were reported last year. He highlighted that young people and the elderly are often the targets of these crimes, including individuals who are new to the internet. Wootler stressed the importance of being cautious and advised against sharing passwords and personal information with unknown sources. He explained, “Criminals may reach out to you pretending to be a well-known person or organization, asking for your phone numbers, passwords, and OTPs to steal your money. Some may trick you by claiming you’ve won a large lottery and need to provide personal information to claim the prize. Despite warnings, some parents and young people have unfortunately given their money to these criminals.”
