President Anura Kumara Dissanayake officially began the construction of a 50-megawatt wind power project by Hayleys Fentons Limited in Mannar this morning (15). This project aligns with the Government's goal to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The modern wind power plant will use the natural wind resources in Mannar and will include 10 wind turbines. It is projected to produce 207,000,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, as reported by the President’s Media Division. The electricity generated will be sold at a rate of USD 0.0465 per unit, which is about LKR 14.37 per unit, with plans for completion by March 2027. These projects include a fully equipped smart classroom for the Oleithuduwai Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School, safe drinking water for 200 homes in partnership with the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, new street lighting along the walkway from Mannar Bridge to Thallady town with help from the Ceylon Electricity Board, and new water channels estimated to cost nearly Rs. 10 million to improve water flow. Additionally, canal dredging has started with the help of Disaster Management Centres to reduce flooding in the area.
