The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has approved a plan to hire more than 23,000 teachers for state services. This hiring will support the new education reforms, according to Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. In December 2024, the Cabinet had already approved the formation of a committee led by the Secretary to the Prime Minister. This committee was tasked with identifying job vacancies in the state service and reviewing the recruitment process. After considering requests to fill these vacancies across various ministries and departments, the Cabinet has now agreed to recruit a total of 26,095 workers for the state service. Of these, 23,344 positions will be for teachers in the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the hiring of 705 people for the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, 452 for the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, 442 for the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, and 248 for the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation.
