The Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist Chapters have sent a letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, asking him to officially declare May 30, 2026, as Vesak Poya Day. This request comes because there are two Poya days in May 2026. The letter explains that the Full Moon Poya Days will occur on May 1 and May 30 in 2026. According to the Ministry of Public Administration's calendar, May 1, 2026, is marked as Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, while May 30, 2026, is noted as Adhi Poson Full Moon Poya Day. However, there is a discussion in society about recognizing May 1 as Vesak Poya, since the 'visā nakatha' does not align with that date. After discussions with the Sangha Sabhas and astrologers, and under the guidance of the Mahanayaka Theros, it has been agreed that May 30, 2026, should be observed as Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, as it aligns with the ‘visā nakatha’ in accordance with traditional Buddhist practices. The letter also stated that it would be fitting to officially declare May 30, 2026, as Vesak Full Moon Poya Day and to direct the relevant state officials to carry out all religious observances and state ceremonies for Vesak on that date.
