At least 13 individuals lost their lives and almost 100 were injured when a passenger train derailed in southern Mexico, as reported by local officials. The incident took place on Sunday on Line Z of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Railway in the Oaxaca region, according to the Mexican Navy. It was noted that around 250 passengers were aboard the train during the derailment. The Navy confirmed that 13 people died and 98 sustained injuries, with 36 of them requiring hospitalization. A passenger who filmed the aftermath stated that the train seemed to be going at a high speed. “We don’t know if it lost its brakes. A lot of people were lying on the ground. We’re okay, a little banged up, but we’re okay.” Photos from the site depicted multiple train cars tumbling down a steep slope, while others lay overturned.
