The Point Pedro Urban Council in Jaffna has completely banned polythene lunch sheets in hotels and food outlets within its area. This ban will start on January 01, 2026. P. Dinesh, the Public Health Inspector for the council, announced this decision during a meeting with local hotel and food outlet owners. Those who do not follow this ban will face strict legal actions. Owners are now required to use natural materials like banana leaves, lotus leaves, and teak leaves to wrap food. They are also allowed to use approved aluminium foil and other food-grade containers for packaging. The Urban Council warned that violators could have their business licenses suspended, as per the authority given to the Chairman of the Urban Council.
