Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya announced that the program offering free sanitary napkins to schoolgirls will continue into 2026. This initiative, which began in 2024 through the Ministry of Education, aims to enhance menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls. The announcement was made during a meeting focused on the project at the Ministry of Education on December 22, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Media Division. The program specifically targets schoolgirls from rural, estate, and economically challenged areas. Currently, it supports over one million schoolgirls in grades above six throughout Sri Lanka, with a funding allocation of Rs. 1.44 billion. The meeting included the Deputy Minister of Education, the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, and several senior officials.
