The Irrigation Department of Sri Lanka has reported that while the Manampitiya River, which is a branch of the Mahaweli River, is currently at a high level, there is no sign of an impending flood. L. S. Sooriyabandara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management), mentioned that the sluice gates of several reservoirs in the Mahaweli basin are open at this time. He added that although the water level in the Thanthirimale Reservoir located in the Anuradhapura District is elevated, there is no major risk of flooding. In the last 24 hours, the most rainfall was recorded in the Ampara District, totaling 25mm, according to the Irrigation Director. Sooriyabandara also confirmed that spill gates at 36 reservoirs managed by the Irrigation Department are open, but these reservoirs are not releasing water at dangerous levels. Additionally, he pointed out that 52 medium-sized reservoirs are currently discharging water, yet they do not pose a threat to residents near riverbanks and in low-lying areas.
