Sri Lanka Police have announced that multiple officers showed negligence in their duties related to the road accident involving Asoka Ranwala, a former Speaker and Member of Parliament for the National People’s Power (NPP) in Gampaha District. A statement from the Police Media Division explained that a special investigation was led by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) responsible for the Traffic Management and Road Safety Division. This inquiry was initiated based on direct orders from the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The investigation found that the following police personnel failed to perform their duties properly during the accident’s investigation: • The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) at the Sapugaskanda Police Station. • The OIC of the Traffic Division, along with the officers involved in the initial investigation. • Senior Gazetted Officers overseeing the Sapugaskanda Police Station. In response to these findings, the IGP has directed the Police Special Investigation Unit (SIU) to carry out a preliminary inquiry. This will lead to formal disciplinary measures against the officers identified for their negligence.
