LNP – Fake branding on canned fish uncovered during raid in Negombo

Following a complaint received by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), a warehouse in Negombo was raided, where a stock of canned fish intended for market distribution was found to be misleadingly labeled with the name and standard logo of a manufacturing company.

The warehouse is located in the Dungalpitiya area of Talahena, Negombo.

CAA investigations revealed that the canned fish had been produced and packaged in unsanitary and irregular conditions, using a falsified standard certificate and the name of a manufacturing company certified by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.

During the raid, officers seized nearly 700 packages of substandard canned fish (each with a net weight of 425 grams), which had been counterfeited and prepared for market distribution, along with a lorry ready to transport the stock.

Preliminary investigations revealed that substandard products from this location had been distributed across Gampaha and surrounding areas over the past two months.

Further investigations are underway, and legal action will be taken against the individuals involved upon completion of these inquiries.
