LNP – WhatsApp to stop working on select iPhones from May 2025

GULF NEWS – WhatsApp users with older iPhones will soon lose access to the messaging platform, as the company plans to withdraw support for devices running outdated iOS versions starting May 5, 2025.

In a continued effort to enhance user security amid rapidly advancing technology and escalating cyber threats, WhatsApp has announced the discontinuation of support for older iOS versions no longer receiving security updates from Apple.

The absence of regular software patches renders these devices increasingly susceptible to vulnerabilities and malicious attacks. By encouraging users to transition to newer devices and updated operating systems, WhatsApp seeks to safeguard user data, uphold privacy standards, and facilitate access to its latest features and security enhancements.

Which iPhones will be affected?

Starting May 5, WhatsApp will require iPhones to run iOS 15.1 or later. Devices still operating on iOS versions earlier than 15.1 will no longer be compatible.

Affected models include:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These models have already been labeled “obsolete” by Apple, meaning no hardware service or replacement parts are available.

WhatsApp Business also impacted

The update will also affect WhatsApp Business, the app version tailored for small businesses. Users relying on older devices will need to upgrade if they want to continue accessing business communication tools.

Device support changes

WhatsApp updated its FAQ, explaining:

“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. Every year, we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.”

What users should do

Users wanting uninterrupted access must upgrade to a newer iPhone model.

Currently, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are the oldest models that will continue supporting WhatsApp. However, since both stopped receiving major iOS updates with the launch of iOS 16, they could be next in line for future support discontinuation.

Why future-proofing matters

By discontinuing support for outdated operating systems, WhatsApp can better optimize the app and roll out new features that may not be compatible with older hardware.

Recent WhatsApp features include:

  • Advanced chat privacy layers
  • Disappearing messages
  • Chat lock options

New tools also prevent the copying of messages and media files, offering stronger data security for users.

WhatsApp’s move highlights the importance of keeping both hardware and software updated to ensure better security and access to the platform’s latest features. Users with affected iPhone models are advised to upgrade promptly to avoid service disruption.
