LNP – Govt. not in a position to provide immediate solutions to teachers’ issues: Minister

Claiming that the Government is not in a position to provide immediate solutions to the demands of the teachers, Education Minister G.L. Peiris said today the Government was planning to provide practical solutions to the issues faced by all public servants from the budget.

He told Parliament that the demands of the teachers were broadly discussed at Monday’s Cabinet meeting and that it was decided to address the issue from the next budget to be presented this November.

He said the Government has admitted that the teachers’ salary should be increased.

The Minister said the stance of the Government on resolving the issues of the teachers was that the matter should be discussed with the National Salaries and Cadres Commission, as it could lead to other complexities within the parallel services.

“We hope to take suitable solutions considering the whole public sector in the next budget. We cannot take immediate action. We are facing an economic crisis due to the Covid pandemic. We have to admit that. Considering all these matters, we hope to provide practical solutions to issues of the whole public sector through the November budget,” he said.
