Two senior cops have got to do some answering

Drug bust at Mt. Lavinia:

Police investigations have commenced against an ASP attached to security contingent of Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera and another senior official of the Mount Lavinia police in connection with the Saturday night detection by the STF of a haul of drugs and contraband in a luxury vehicle.

The STF men on searching the vehicle at Hotel Road found a pouch containing the Police identity card and an ATM card belonging the ASP. They also took into custody 3,000 milligrams of cocaine, 4,500 milligrams of narcotic tablets, 9,470 milligrams of hashish, 9,420 milligrams of Kush cannabis, 18 bottles of foreign liquor, 400 foreign cigarettes and two swords in the possession of the suspects.

Police commandos arrested four persons including a coordinating secretary attached to the Finance Ministry while they were transporting contraband for a beach party at Mount Lavinia on Saturday evening.

The suspects were handed over to the Mount Lavinia police around 4.15 am Sunday by the STF men.

The preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were taking the contraband for a beach party of a Facebook fan group.

The policemen detailed to patrol the area were not present and action had been initiated to question their senior officer for dereliction of duty, police sources said.

The ASP attached to the MSD and detailed for the security of the Finance Minister would be investigated to find out how his Police identity card and ATM card had been found with the contraband in the luxury vehicle, police said.

Produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate three suspects including the Coordinating Secretary attached to the Finance Ministry were bailed out and one was remanded till August10.
